End-of-life care in Taiwan is highly institutionalized, yet some families still opt for home-based hospice care.
This presentation explores the specialized care practices undertaken by family caregivers to help patients die at home
and how these practices are implemented. The research draws on observations from palliative care wards and in-depth
interviews with family members and medical team personnel.
Findings reveal that the boundaries between professional and lay caregiving become blurred in home-based hospice care.
Family caregivers must acquire a diverse range of complex skills. Moreover, the high uncertainty inherent in end-of-life
care increases the challenge for laypeople to master specialized skills within a limited timeframe.
